Suspected Arson in Steyning Leaves Block of Flats Damaged

Emergency services rushed to St Cuthman’s Road in Steyning after a fire broke out early this morning (December 10) at approximately 12:29 a.m. The blaze engulfed a block of flats, prompting a large-scale response involving firefighters, paramedics, and police officers. Authorities have confirmed that the fire is being investigated as a case of deliberate ignition.

Coordinated Rescue Efforts Save Residents

Dozens of emergency personnel worked tirelessly to contain the flames and evacuate residents. Firefighters used ladders to rescue eight people from the building, many of whom were trapped on the upper floors. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among those evacuated.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service provided details of the scene: “Four fire engines were dispatched to the site. Firefighters found the ground and first floors heavily affected. Crews used ladders at the front and rear of the building to carry out the rescues, ensuring all individuals were safely evacuated.”

The fire was successfully brought under control after four hours, with crews leaving the scene by 4:20 a.m.

Police Confirm Suspicion of Deliberate Ignition

Sussex Police have labeled the incident as suspected arson. A police representative stated, “Officers assisted West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service at the scene. The fire was extinguished, and residents were safely evacuated. The case is now being investigated as deliberate ignition.”

Authorities are urging witnesses or anyone with video footage to come forward. The public can report information online or by calling 101, quoting serial 69 of 10/12. Crimestoppers, an independent charity, is also accepting anonymous tips at 0800 555 111 or through their website.

Medical Assessments Conducted On-Site

The South East Coast Ambulance Service (Secamb) confirmed their presence at the scene shortly after 1:30 a.m. “Ambulance crews assessed and treated eight individuals on-site before they were taken to the hospital for further evaluations,” said a Secamb spokesperson.

Community Response and Safety Measures

The incident has left the local community shaken, with many expressing concerns about safety in the area. Residents have praised the quick actions of emergency responders in preventing the fire from escalating further.

As the investigation continues, authorities are encouraging vigilance and urging anyone with relevant information to assist.
