Eight people were arrested during the annual Boxing Day hunt parade in Lewes, East Sussex, an event that has sparked renewed controversy over its place in modern society.
The parade, a tradition dating back to the 1800s, is organised by the Southdown and Eridge Hunt and takes place in the town’s high street. Supporters say it is an essential celebration of rural culture, while critics describe it as outdated and cruel.
Organisers defended the event, stating it operates “within the parameters of the law” and plays an important role in supporting the local rural community. “This is a celebration of heritage and a chance for the community to come together,” a hunt spokesperson added.
However, protesters voiced strong opposition, with some branding the parade an “abomination” and “barbaric.” Clashes between supporters and demonstrators prompted Sussex Police to intervene.
A Sussex Police spokesperson confirmed: “confirmed eight people had been held in connection with the parade. We have no further details at this time,”
The Boxing Day hunt parade comes under increasing scrutiny since the introduction of the Hunting Act in 2004, which made using dogs to chase or kill foxes illegal in England and Wales. Hunts are still permitted to engage in trail hunting, following a pre-laid scent rather than live prey.
Critics argue that trail hunting is often used as a guise for illegal fox hunting. Protesters at the Lewes parade claimed the event perpetuates cruelty and called for its abolition.
The arrests have reignited fierce debate over whether the tradition still aligns with contemporary ethical values, with both sides standing firm in their convictions.
