A poignant art installation depicting the struggles faced by the people of Ukraine has arrived in Brighton & Hove, captivating locals and visitors alike. Situated in Valley Gardens, near the Mazda Fountain, the installation will be on display from May 15 to May 31, 2023.
Standing tall at 13 feet, the steel silhouettes portray a soldier holding a baby, guiding a refugee mother and child towards safety. The installation, created by the community group Standing with Giants, aims to shed light on the hardships endured by those affected by the ongoing conflict in war-torn Ukraine.
Having embarked on a nationwide tour, the installation has previously visited other towns such as Portsmouth and Worthing, evoking emotional responses from all who encounter it.
In addition to the Ukraine tribute, Standing with Giants has crafted several other art installations honoring those who lost their lives in the Falklands War and paying tribute to NHS heroes.
As the installation travels across the country, Ukrainian refugees and charitable organizations have been gathering to pay homage to their homeland and find solace in the artwork.
The launch of the installation was attended by Lizzie Deane, the Mayor of Brighton & Hove, who expressed her city’s support for Ukrainian refugees. She stated, “The city of Brighton & Hove is pleased and proud to welcome Ukrainian refugees, and this sculpture will serve to remind residents and visitors alike of their presence within our community, and our willingness to help and support them as much as we can for the duration of this terrible conflict.”
Dan Barton, who collaborated with artist Peter Naylor to bring the vision to life, emphasized the invitation extended to Ukrainian refugees and charities to visit the installation. Their presence not only raises awareness but also contributes to fundraising efforts for those suffering in Ukraine.
Barton added, “Art can send a powerful message to aggressors and show a meaningful message of solidarity to those in need. Everywhere we take this sculpture, we see an outpouring of emotion.”
