A 16-year-old youth from Seaford has appeared in Brighton Magistrates court charged with the murder of another 16-year-old boy, Joshua Ingram. He also faces a separate charge of possessing a knife.
The Alleged Incident
Prosecutors told the court that Joshua, from Newhaven, was stabbed twice at Seaford railway station on Wednesday evening — once in the back and once in the side. He was pronounced dead about an hour later, but the court heard his injuries were so severe that he would have lost his life within minutes.
The stabbing is alleged to have been carried out over a drug debt.
Court Proceedings
The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Brighton Magistrates’ Court this morning. He spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth. His defence solicitor, Rachel Pain, represented him during the short hearing.
District Judge Amanda Kelly described the case as involving “the tragic and frankly shocking death of another young person.”
The defendant has been remanded into youth custody and will next appear at Lewes Crown Court on Monday, 15 September 2025.
Identifying the Victim & Community Response
The victim was formally identified as 16-year-old Joshua Ingram from Newhaven. His family described him as a “cheeky chappy who was loved by many,” adding that he had been taken “far too soon.”
Police have said they believe Joshua and the accused were known to each other, and stressed that this appears to be an isolated incident.
Statement From Police
British Transport Police offered condolences to Joshua’s family and confirmed that additional officers will be visible in the Seaford area in the coming days. Officers urged anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
What Happens Next
The case will be transferred to Lewes Crown Court on 15 September.
The trial process will examine the alleged motive, the evidence presented, and the role of the defendant.
Police are appealing for witnesses who may have been at Seaford station around 5pm on Wednesday to assist the inquiry.
This case has shone a light on the growing concerns around knife crime among young people and how even a small debt can escalate into devastating consequences. For the community, it is a moment of grief, shock, and reflection on the fragile nature of young lives.
