Benches along New Road in Brighton are being taken away this week as part of efforts to curb antisocial behaviour in the busy city centre street.
Brighton and Hove City Council confirmed the move is one of several measures aimed at improving safety, accessibility and the general environment of the area.
New Road, which was redesigned in 2007 as the country’s first shared space for both pedestrians and vehicles, has in recent years become a hotspot for antisocial activity.
Council officials say they are working with Sussex Police, local businesses and community groups to look at longer-term ideas for how the space can be transformed into a more welcoming and secure public area.
A Brighton and Hove City Council spokesperson said: “We are committed to making New Road a safer and more inviting place for everyone, and this is the first step in wider improvements planned for the area.”
