A Brighton man has pleaded guilty after spraying racist and homophobic graffiti on walls across the city.
John McMillan, 49, also known as Johnny Crew, of Lavender Street, Brighton, admitted to six offences following an investigation by Sussex Police.
The graffiti appeared at Old Steine, St James’s Street, and New Road between 9 and 11 September, targeting Muslim and LGBTQ+ communities.
Police linked the offences after a video emerged on social media showing McMillan filming himself while carrying out the vandalism. The footage was shared on Instagram, prompting public concern and a swift police response.
McMillan was arrested on 9 October and later charged with three counts of criminal damage and three counts of religiously aggravated criminal damage.
He appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court the next day, where he pleaded guilty to all charges.
He is due to be sentenced on 19 December.
Police Sergeant Daniel Gallichan from the Brighton Neighbourhood Policing Team said:
“McMillan filmed himself committing these offences and shared the videos to cause further harm. The evidence was clear and indisputable.”
Officers said the graffiti caused distress to residents and community groups, and urged anyone affected by hate incidents to come forward.
Sussex Police reminded the public that hate crime can have a lasting impact and will be dealt with firmly. Reports can be made online, by calling 101, or by visiting a local police station.
