The Hove Station Footbridge, closed last week due to storm damage, is undergoing essential repairs after engineers declared the structure unsafe.
Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet Member for Transport and City Infrastructure, confirmed that both the roof and wooden steps were affected, forcing the footbridge to be shut to the public. The closure has caused disruption for residents and rail users, who face a long detour via Fonthill Road and the underpass to reach the other side of the station.
Following inspections, engineers found that wooden joints and steps needed more extensive work than first expected. Contractors are now replacing the steps and carrying out structural improvements in partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council and Network Rail.
Cllr Muten said:
“I know how inconvenient this is for residents and passengers and how important it is to make it safe and reopen as soon as we can. The bridge is a valued community asset, and this is an opportunity to give it a new lease of life.”
The repairs are expected to take around another week, with the aim of reopening the bridge by the end of next weekend.
Cllr Muten also thanked residents for their patience, as well as the council team, Network Rail and their contractors M Group (Rail) and HRS (Rail), for “partnership working to resolve this for the community at pace.”
