Elderly Woman Dies in Kingsway House Fire

An 86-year-old woman has tragically died following a house fire on Kingsway in Hove during the early hours of Sunday morning (14 September).

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that crews were alerted at 6.54am and four fire engines from Hove, Roedean, and Preston Circus were sent to the scene. A command unit and an aerial ladder platform were also deployed as part of the response.

Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three hose reel jets to tackle the blaze, while the aerial ladder platform was brought in to help fight the fire from above.

Paramedics and Sussex Police officers also attended. Nearby residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed, and people were urged to avoid the area.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said:

“Officers were called to a fire at a property in Kingsway, Hove at around 7.15am on Sunday (14 September). The fire was extinguished, and sadly, an 86-year-old woman is confirmed to have died at the address. Her next of kin have been informed.

“The road was closed in both directions while emergency services worked at the scene. Kingsway has since reopened.

“An investigation is ongoing alongside East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to determine the cause of the fire, which is not being treated as suspicious at this time. A report will be prepared for HM Coroner.”
