41-year-old Mathew White

The family of a Brighton man who tragically died following a jet ski incident off the Sussex coast have paid tribute to him, describing him as someone who “lived a life filled with laughter, love and adventure.”

Emergency services, including Sussex Police and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), were called at 1.46pm on Thursday, October 24, following reports of a jet skier in difficulty at sea.

The man, 41-year-old Mathew White, was brought to shore, where he received medical treatment before being taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. Sadly, he was pronounced dead later that day.

Police confirmed that Mathew’s death is not being treated as suspicious.

In a heartfelt tribute, Mathew’s father said:

“We are heartbroken at the passing of our beloved Mathew James White, aka Gobbo.

He lived a life filled with laughter, love and adventure; he left a lasting memory on all those who knew him.

Our family is devastated by this unimaginable loss, and we ask for privacy as we grieve and try to come to terms with what has happened.

We are grateful for the outpouring of love from friends and family.”

Mathew’s family have shared a photo in his memory as they thank the community for their support.
