A man has tragically died following a major search and rescue operation off Brighton Marina on Friday afternoon (October 24).
Emergency services were called just after 1.15pm after reports of a person in distress in the water who had earlier been seen on a jet ski.
Coastguard teams from Newhaven, along with the Shoreham and Brighton RNLI lifeboats, Sussex Police, and the South East Coast Ambulance Service, were all deployed to the scene.
The man was recovered from the water and taken ashore, where he was given emergency medical care before being transported to the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Sadly, despite the efforts of rescuers and medical staff, he was later pronounced dead.
A spokesperson for Sussex Police confirmed:
“A 41-year-old man from Brighton was brought to shore where he received medical attention, however, he was sadly pronounced deceased at hospital.”
His next of kin have been informed.
An investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
