Brighton drivers are being warned of two weeks of traffic misery as one of the city’s busiest routes grinds to a halt overnight.
From Sunday 12 October until Sunday 26 October, the A23 between Old Steine and Edward Street will close every night from 8pm to 6am for resurfacing.
Buses Thrown Off Route
The closures will play havoc with bus services. Depending on which stretch is shut, services will be thrown onto long detours via Lower Rock Gardens, the seafront, Edward Street or Queens Road.
Regular stops by the Royal Pavilion will also vanish. Instead, new stops are being set up at Castle Square and north of the war memorial.
Long-Term Works
It’s all part of the £10m Valley Gardens 3 project. Pavement widening, cycle lanes and new layouts are taking shape. The Aquarium roundabout is still waiting to be ripped out, but the council insists the full scheme will be ready next summer.
Council Says Be Patient
Councillor Trevor Muten admitted disruption is on the way but urged people to stay calm.
“There will be overnight disruption for a couple of weeks,” he said. “We’re doing everything we can to get this finished quickly.”
Expect Delays
For now, though, the message is simple: plan ahead, leave early, or risk being stuck in the chaos.
