A man has died after getting into difficulty while swimming off the coast of Brighton on New Year’s Day, police have confirmed.

Emergency services including the Coastguard, Brighton RNLI, police, ambulance crews and an air ambulance were called to the sea off Albion Groyne, near the western side of Brighton Palace Pier, at around 10.35am on Wednesday, January 1, following reports that a swimmer was in trouble in the water.

The man, a 51-year-old from Kettering, was brought ashore and given medical treatment by responding crews. Despite their efforts, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and Sussex Police confirmed the coroner has been notified. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Authorities have not released further details at this stage.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of swimming in winter sea conditions, where cold water temperatures, strong currents and unpredictable weather can quickly become life-threatening, even for experienced swimmers.
