An army of locals descended on Brighton city centre this evening, scaling ladders and draping St George’s Cross flags across some of the busiest streets in the city.
Dozens of flags were hung along West Street, North Street and King’s Road on the seafront, creating a striking display of red and white. The group also took their efforts east along the A259 towards Ovingdean, where further flags were tied to lampposts overlooking the coastal route.
The latest wave follows similar scenes last week in Saltdean, where flags placed on the A259 prompted Brighton and Hove City Council to send contractors to remove them. However, workers reportedly refused to continue after receiving verbal abuse, telling the council that they would only carry out removals if supported by a police presence.
Tonight’s activity means tens of St George’s Cross flags are now flying across Brighton and the wider seafront route, visible to commuters, holidaymakers and residents alike.
Brighton and Hove City Council has yet to issue a statement about the fresh flag installations.
