Scaffolding has collapsed from a seafront building in Hove, crushing several parked cars but narrowly avoiding injury.
The incident happened on Thursday afternoon at Kingsway Court on First Avenue, close to the seafront. Large sections of scaffolding fell from height into the road below, prompting an immediate response from emergency services and the closure of the affected area.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service were all called to the scene shortly after 1.30pm. Fire crews worked alongside police to secure the area and assess the risk to public safety.
A spokesperson for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said crews were mobilised at 1.29pm following reports of collapsed scaffolding. One fire engine from Preston Circus attended, with firefighters making the scene safe and coordinating with police while cordons were put in place. No injuries were reported, and crews left the scene just after 3.15pm, handing responsibility over to the building’s main contractor.
South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed paramedics were also sent after being alerted by police, but no casualties required treatment.
Several vehicles sustained significant damage during the collapse. An assessment of the building and surrounding area is ongoing, with contractors now responsible for ensuring the site is secure.
