Drivers face heavy congestion on surrounding routes as emergency services respond
The A27 remains closed in both directions this afternoon following a serious collision between Falmer and the Southerham Roundabout near Lewes.
Sussex Police confirmed:
“Following a serious collision on the A27 near Lewes, the road is currently closed in both directions between Falmer and the Southerham Roundabout. Emergency services remain on scene, and the diversion is being supported by Highways. We ask drivers to avoid the area at this time.”
The closure has led to severe congestion on alternative routes. Sussex Travel Watch has reported:
- A259 westbound: Queuing traffic from Bishopstone near Seaford through to Newhaven.
- A259 eastbound: Slow and queuing traffic from Newhaven towards Rottingdean as drivers attempt to avoid the A27 closure.
Motorists are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys and to seek alternative routes where possible.
