Two dog owners were rescued from rapidly rising tides after attempting to save their pet at Hope Gap, near the iconic Seven Sisters cliffs, on Saturday afternoon (23 August).
The drama began around 1pm when the couple’s dog fell from the cliffs. In a desperate attempt to reach their pet, the owners climbed down the cliff face. However, they soon became trapped as the incoming tide cut off their escape route, leaving them stranded against the rocks with water levels rising.
A passing vessel spotted the couple in difficulty and immediately called 999, requesting the Coastguard. Newhaven RNLI lifeboat and Birling Gap Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to the scene.
The RNLI lifeboat crew successfully recovered the pair from the water and brought them safely ashore. Coastguard Rescue Officers provided them with safety advice following the incident.
Thankfully, neither of the owners was injured.
HM Coastguard has since issued a reminder to the public:
“Always keep your dog on a lead when visiting the coast. They are easily distracted by smells and sounds which could lead them to fall from the cliff edge. If your dog does get into trouble at the coast, do not attempt to rescue them yourself. Instead, stay in a safe place so Coastguard Rescue Teams can locate you.”
The incident serves as a timely warning as thousands flock to Sussex’s coastline during the summer holidays.
