Both Eastbourne RNLI lifeboats were launched in the early hours of Saturday, 11 October, after reports of an injured person in a precarious position on cliffs to the west of Eastbourne.

The call came in at 1.42am, prompting a large multi-agency response coordinated by HM Coastguard.

Volunteer crews from Eastbourne were joined on scene by Newhaven, Birling Gap and Eastbourne Coastguard Rescue Teams, alongside Sussex Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service, and coastguard helicopter Rescue 363.

An extensive search was carried out in darkness, with all emergency teams working together to locate the casualty.

Shortly before 4am, Sussex Police officers located the injured person outside the main search area, allowing both lifeboats to stand down and return to station.

The RNLI has reminded the public:

“In a coastal emergency, always dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.”
