A man from Heathfield has been sentenced after an assault left a woman with a broken nose and serious facial injuries.
The incident happened on 15 July 2023, when police were called to a property in Cross in Hand, Heathfield, following reports that a man had punched a woman in the face and caused damage to property inside the address.
The assault left the victim with a broken nose and damaged teeth.
Police arrested William Bennett, 35, of Heathfield Road in Five Ashes, on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm.
Charged with multiple offences
Following an investigation, Bennett was charged on 4 July 2024 with a series of offences, including:
- Three counts of assault
- Two counts of intentional strangulation
- Two counts of criminal damage
- One count of engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour
He was released on court bail and initially pleaded not guilty to all charges.
However, as his trial began on 4 August, Bennett changed his plea to guilty on one charge of criminal damage. The trial continued, and he was subsequently found guilty of causing actual bodily harm.
Sentencing at Hove Crown Court
Bennett appeared for sentencing at Hove Crown Court on 10 October, where he was handed:
- An 18-month prison sentence, suspended for two years
- A 10-year restraining order against the victim
- A requirement to undertake rehabilitative activities
- A £3,000 fine
