A man has died after getting into difficulty while kite surfing off the coast of Camber Sands this afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the beach shortly after 3pm on Monday (4 August) following reports that a kite surfer had been swept into trouble by strong winds and rough seas.
Coastguard Rescue Teams, paramedics from South East Coast Ambulance Service, and specialist Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART) attended the scene. Despite their best efforts, the man was pronounced dead on the beach.
Police Investigation Underway
The UK Coastguard confirmed their involvement in the multi-agency response but said Sussex Police are leading the investigation.
“We were tasked to assist in a multi-agency response this afternoon at Camber Sands. Sussex Police are now leading on this incident,” a Coastguard spokesperson said.
A spokes person for Sussex Police said “Emergency services attended a medical incident at Broomhill Sands, Camber, on Monday, 4 August.
Sadly, a man aged 40 was pronounced deceased at the scene.
His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time.
There were no suspicious circumstances and a report will be prepared for HM Coroner.”
Safety Warnings for Sea Users
Coastal safety officials continue to urge residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution near the sea during hazardous weather, with strong currents, choppy waves, and high winds making conditions dangerous for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts.
We are awaiting further updates from Sussex Police regarding the ongoing investigation.
