Emergency crews were called to the water east of Eastbourne Pier on Monday afternoon (3 November) after reports of a person in difficulty in the sea.

The alarm was raised at around 1:59pm when Solent Coastguard requested assistance from Eastbourne RNLI. With worsening sea conditions and force 6 winds, the charity’s Trent Class lifeboat Esme Anderson launched from Sovereign Harbour and made its way to the scene at speed.

Police and local Coastguard teams located the casualty a short distance from the beach. However, due to shallow water and heavy surf, the lifeboat was unable to reach them.

Coastguard Rescue Officers entered the water and successfully brought the casualty to safety, before handing them into the care of the ambulance service for further treatment.

The lifeboat was then stood down and returned to station.

I watched this situation unfold from the beach, I believe it was a woman who entered the sea fully clothed….she was in the water for at least half to three quarters of an hour, several times she went under the water as the strong waves battered her down….so glad to see that she was successfully rescued
