Sussex Police have renewed their appeal for information after a 66-year-old Eastbourne man died in hospital, weeks after he was assaulted.
Emergency services were called to Canute Close, Eastbourne, at around 6.20pm on 26 October following reports that the man had been attacked. He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on 12 November.
His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
Detectives are now investigating whether the man’s death is directly linked to the earlier assault. A 24-year-old man has already been charged in connection with the incident and has appeared in court. Police say they are not seeking anyone else in relation to the assault at this time.
Detective Superintendent Jayantha Mendis-Gunasekera said:
“Our thoughts are with the man’s family following the tragic news of his death in hospital. Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the assault on 26 October, and whether this was a contributing factor in his death.
“A suspect was arrested and charged in connection with the assault, and we are not seeking anyone else. This is believed to have been an isolated incident that did not pose a wider risk to the community.
“We are urging any residents or witnesses who have not yet come forward to do so. We are taking the case extremely seriously and are determined to find answers for the man’s family.”
Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact Sussex Police online, quoting Operation Ariel, serial 1061 of 26/10.
