Detectives investigating a shocking arson attack at a mosque in Peacehaven have made a second arrest.

Emergency services were called to the building in Phyllis Avenue around 9.50pm on Saturday, 4 October, following reports of a fire at the community mosque.

Footage from the scene shows two individuals wearing masks and dark clothing approaching the front entrance before spraying an accelerant and setting the doorway alight. Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service quickly attended and extinguished the blaze before it could spread further.

Fortunately, those inside the mosque at the time were unharmed, but the fire caused significant damage to the building and a nearby vehicle.

A 46-year-old man from Littlehampton was arrested on Monday afternoon (6 October) on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He has since been released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.

This evening (Tuesday 7 October), officers confirmed a second arrest. A 25-year-old man, of no fixed address, was taken into custody on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cullimore, from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said:
“We believe there are people in the community who know who is responsible for this appalling and reckless attack, and we are urging anyone with information which could be vital to our investigation to come forward. Please contact us or ring 101, quoting Operation Spey.”

Superintendent Rachel Swinney added:
“We continue to work with our local religious communities to support them and ensure their concerns are heard and acted upon.

“Sussex Police takes a zero-tolerance approach to hate crime and there is no place for hate across the county.

“If you have concerns for your safety or experience any hate or criminal behaviour, please speak to an officer or contact us online or by calling 101. Always dial 999 in an emergency.”

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area or who may have CCTV, dashcam, or doorbell footage to come forward.
