The England Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT) worked alongside Sussex Police to execute warrants at addresses in Heathfield, Eastbourne and Bexhill-on-Sea, as well as a business premises in Bexhill-on-Sea. A 47-year-old man was arrested in Eastbourne, a 66-year-old man in Heathfield, and a 58-year-old woman in Bexhill-on-Sea. Officers seized electronic devices and documentation during the searches.
The three suspects were taken into custody for questioning and have since been bailed while enquiries continue as part of the ongoing investigation, led by the IMLT in partnership with East Sussex Trading Standards.
IMLT head Dave Benbow said the operation targeted illegal lenders who “blight communities” and urged anyone affected by loan sharks to seek confidential support.
Around 1.08 million people in England are estimated to be in debt to illegal lenders. Warning signs include no paperwork, unclear terms, confiscation of personal items, escalating charges, and threats or intimidation.
