A full-scale search operation was launched late Wednesday night after a kayaker failed to return home, leading to a tragic discovery in the waters off Eastbourne.

At 11:43pm on 6 August, both the Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) and All-Weather Lifeboat (ALB) from RNLI Eastbourne were launched following a report of an overdue kayaker. The lifeboat crews worked in close coordination with HM Coastguard, who also tasked Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 163 from Lydd to assist in the search.

The multi-agency operation scoured both the shoreline and open waters. During the search, the missing kayaker was spotted in the sea by the crew of the ALB and was swiftly recovered by the ILB. Casualty care was provided, and the individual was transferred to the care of waiting emergency services.

Despite the rapid response and best efforts of all involved, the kayaker was sadly pronounced deceased. Their next of kin have been informed.

A spokesperson for Eastbourne RNLI stated:

“This is not the outcome anyone had hoped for. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the individual at this deeply difficult time.”

The RNLI and Coastguard have renewed calls for all water users to ensure they are properly equipped, carry a means of calling for help, and let someone know when they expect to return.

Anyone who sees someone in trouble along the coast is urged to dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
