A yellow weather warning for ice has been issued for the whole of Sussex, with residents urged to take extra care as freezing conditions are expected to make travel hazardous.
The warning, issued by the Met Office, is in force during the early hours and morning, when temperatures are forecast to drop close to or below freezing. Icy patches are expected to form on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, increasing the risk of slips, falls and difficult driving conditions.
Forecasters say the ice is likely to develop overnight as temperatures fall, particularly following rain or residual moisture on surfaces. Rural areas, bridges and higher ground are expected to be most affected, but urban areas are also at risk during the morning commute.
Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for journeys, drive with caution and be aware that surfaces which appear wet may in fact be icy. Pedestrians are also warned to take care, especially on steps, slopes and poorly lit pavements.
While a yellow warning is the lowest level issued by the Met Office, it still means there is a reasonable chance of disruption. Minor delays to road and public transport services are possible, and there is an increased likelihood of accidents caused by icy conditions.
The Met Office has reminded the public to stay informed by checking local forecasts and travel updates before heading out, particularly during the early morning period when conditions are expected to be at their worst.
Residents across Sussex are encouraged to take sensible precautions and remain alert as the cold snap continues.
