Surrey Police are appealing for witnesses after a man in his 50s tragically died in a collision on the M23 at Merstham this morning (Sunday, 17 August 2025).
Emergency services were called shortly before 6.30am following reports of a collision in a layby involving the driver of an Audi Q4 and the driver of a Volkswagen, who was outside of his vehicle at the time of the incident.
Despite the efforts of paramedics, the man in his 50s was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Arrest Made
A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody while enquiries continue.
Road Closures and Disruption
The M23 northbound carriageway was closed for several hours between Junctions 8 and 7 while collision investigators worked at the scene. There were also additional closures on the A23 northbound between Glebe Road and Dean Lane, causing significant disruption to traffic throughout the morning.
Police Appeal for Information
Detectives are now appealing for witnesses and, in particular, information about the movements of a purple Audi Q4 immediately prior to the collision.
