Police are appealing for information after a cherished family tortoise and its house were stolen from an outbuilding in the Hassocks area on the evening of Monday, 21 July 2025.
The female tortoise, who is 35 years old, has lived with her owner her entire life. She is approximately six inches across and weighs around 6.5 pounds. Her devastated owner said the tortoise is not independent in her eating habits, only consuming food when it’s offered directly, and relies on strict daily routines.
Sussex Police say the burglary took place after someone broke into an outbuilding and removed both the animal and its shelter. Officers and the pet’s owner are deeply concerned for her wellbeing, as tortoises require very specific care and conditions to remain healthy.
“Tortoises are not the easiest of animals to look after,” a police spokesperson said. “They need knowledgeable care, and this tortoise has been used to a particular routine for over three decades.”
The theft has left the owner “worried sick” about what is happening to their beloved pet.
