Emergency services have responded to two separate explosives-related incidents in East Sussex — one in Newhaven and another in Seaford — on Wednesday, July 24.

In Newfield Road, Newhaven, officers were called to a residential property where unexploded munitions were found inside. A 50-metre safety cordon remains in place, and specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers are continuing their work to assess and secure the scene.

A 54-year-old man from Newhaven has been arrested on suspicion of burglary in connection with the Newhaven incident. He remains in police custody.

Police have confirmed there is no indication the incident is terror-related. Residents evacuated from the area will be allowed to return once it is confirmed safe to do so.

While the bomb squad was dealing with the Newhaven scene, they were also diverted to Seaford, where a WWII-era bomb was uncovered after being dug up by a member of the public.

Fortunately, the Seaford device has now been safely dealt with, and that incident is now over.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police said:

“We are continuing to engage with local residents and the council.

A 54-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary in connection with this incident. There is nothing to suggest this is terror-related.”
