Firefighters were called out to a series of suspected arson attacks in Whitehawk on Monday evening (July 14), after flames and smoke were seen rising from a grass bank in Haybourne Road, Brighton.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were alerted at 9.07pm to reports of multiple fires involving trees and dry grassland. Two fire engines were dispatched to the scene – one from Roedean and another from Preston Circus.
A fire service spokesperson said:
“Crews used one hosereel jet and one wildfire beater to extinguish the fires. There were no casualties reported and the fires were believed to have been started deliberately.”
The incident, which created dramatic scenes as smoke billowed over the Whitehawk area, was brought under control without injuries. However, the deliberate nature of the blaze has sparked concern among residents and prompted warnings about the dangers of arson, especially during dry summer periods.
Police appeal likely as fire deemed deliberate
Local residents reported seeing flashing lights and emergency services at the scene for around an hour. While no arrests have been made, Sussex Police are expected to investigate the suspected arson.
