Emergency teams across West Sussex had one of their busiest days this summer, with Littlehampton Coastguard reporting over seven incidents in a single day, including more than 40 missing children at just one beach.

The Coastguard worked closely with Selsey and Hayling Island Coastguard Rescue Teams, Sussex Police, RNLI lifeboat crews, and lifeguards at West Wittering Beach to handle a range of incidents on Saturday. These included people in the water, medical emergencies, and coordinating a helicopter landing site in Chichester.

But the most alarming trend was the sheer number of lost children.

“It’s estimated that over 40 children were reported missing throughout the day on just one beach,” said a spokesperson from Littlehampton Coastguard. “Thanks to rapid response and cooperation with lifeguards, many were quickly reunited.”

🛟 Stay Safe on the Beach: Coastguard Advice
With crowds continuing to flock to the coast in the hot weather, the Coastguard has issued these key safety tips:

📱 Use free wristbands – Available from lifeguards, private estates, or local councils. Write your phone number to help responders reunite you with your child.

🤳 Take a beach selfie – This helps rescuers identify what your child is wearing.

📍Set a meeting point – Choose a lifeguard hut or clear landmark in case someone gets separated.

☎️ Call 999 for emergencies – Ask for the Coastguard and alert the nearest lifeguard if available.
