Over 50 park items vandalised with offensive symbols, causing thousands in damage

Police have launched an investigation into a string of hate crime-related vandalism incidents at Hotham Park in Bognor, which have caused thousands of pounds in damage.

Since early June, more than 50 wooden ornaments, bins, and park features have been defaced with offensive symbols, either drawn or carved into the surfaces. The ongoing damage has placed a significant financial and operational burden on Arun District Council, who are working closely with Sussex Police to tackle the issue.

Sergeant Ross Beaumont of Sussex Police said:

“This offensive behaviour has caused upset in the community and has led to unnecessary cost and time to repair the damage. Someone must know who is responsible.”

A spokesperson for Arun District Council added:

“We have made it a priority to remove the damage as much as we can, as often as we can, but this comes at a significant cost and pulls staff away from other planned work that enhances our parks and green spaces.”

Police are appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area or who may have relevant information.

Anyone with information is urged to call 101, quoting serial 495 of 05/06, or report it online at the Sussex Police website. You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
