RNLI lifeboat, Coastguard teams, and rescue helicopter involved in extensive search operation

Eastbourne RNLI and multiple emergency services were called into action on Saturday afternoon (14 June) after a report of unattended clothing sparked fears for someone potentially in distress along the coast.

At 12:29pm, Solent Coastguard received information about clothing found abandoned to the west of Eastbourne, raising concerns that someone may have entered the water.

Eastbourne’s All-Weather Lifeboat was launched and made best speed to the area, working alongside local Coastguard rescue teams and Sussex Police officers. A coordinated shoreline and sea search began, but initial efforts yielded no results.

As the search continued, the area was expanded, and Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 363 was deployed to assist from the air.

After nearly four hours of searching, the individual was located onshore by search teams. The casualty was assessed and received further care at the scene. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.

All search assets were then stood down and returned to their respective stations.

An RNLI spokesperson said:

“We’re relieved this incident had a positive outcome thanks to the coordinated effort of our volunteer crew, Coastguard teams, and emergency service partners. We always urge the public to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard in any coastal emergency.”
