Gatwick Airport’s runway was temporarily closed this lunchtime following an aborted takeoff of a British Airways flight to Vancouver. Emergency services at Gatwick were swiftly mobilised, with four Gatwick Airport Fire appliances dispatched to the scene.
The unconfirmed reason for the aborted takeoff is a “Handling Error.” The plane has since been towed off the runway to stand 233. After a thorough runway inspection, the runway has reopened for flights.
As a result of this incident, delays are occurring at the airport. Several flights have been diverted, and some departures have been canceled. Passengers are advised to check the status of their flights.
One notable diversion was the Emirates flight, the largest plane to use Gatwick, flying from Dubai. This flight was diverted to Brussels and is expected to continue on to Gatwick in the next hour.
A London Gatwick spokesperson said: “The main runway was closed for 50 minutes today (28 June) due to a departing aircraft having hot brakes. Safety is our top priority and London Gatwick’s dedicated airport fire service swiftly attended to support the aircraft. 16 inbound flights were diverted during the closure. The runway is now open and operating as normal.
“23 flights were cancelled and there are a number of delays due to the knock-on impact. We are working with our airlines and other airport partners to minimise disruption. Passengers should contact their airlines directly for the latest flight information.”
Passengers are urged to stay updated on their flight statuses as the airport works to return to regular operations.
