Police in Bognor Regis have arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of racially abusing a police officer while in custody.
The incident began on 17 June when officers were called to reports of a man attempting to gain entry to a property in West Street, Bognor Regis. Upon arrival, the suspect was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.
While in custody, the man is alleged to have racially abused an officer of Filipino descent. As a result, he was further arrested for a racially aggravated public order offence.
The suspect, who is local to the Bognor Regis area, has since been released on conditional bail pending further investigation.
A spokesperson for Sussex Police confirmed that the force treats all forms of abuse against its officers with the utmost seriousness and that any such allegations will be dealt with appropriately.
