Man Remanded in Custody for Attempted Murder of Woman in Crawley

Alex Powell, 27, Charged Following Disturbance at Crawley Address

A man has been remanded in custody after being charged with the attempted murder of a 23-year-old woman in Crawley. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, June 25, prompted a swift response from officers following a report of a disturbance at a residence.

The victim sought medical attention at East Surrey Hospital and has since been discharged. Concurrently, Sussex Police arrested a 27-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder the same day.

After an investigation led by Crawley’s Safeguarding Investigation Unit, Alex Powell, of no fixed address, faces charges including attempted murder, intentional suffocation, and assault on an emergency worker.

Appearing before Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, June 27, Powell was remanded in custody pending a hearing at Lewes Crown Court scheduled for July 25.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Cobbett said: “This is a complex investigation, and the victim is receiving support from specially-trained officers.

“We work in partnership with statutory and voluntary agencies to ensure that those suffering domestic abuse get the support that they need.

“Domestic abuse perpetrators cause harm within our communities, and our officers work to relentlessly pursue them to ensure that they are held to account for the harm they cause.”
