A teenager has been treated in hospital after a disturbing early morning incident in the heart of Brighton.

Emergency services were called to North Street at approximately 6:30am on July 28, following reports that a substance had been thrown in the face of an 18-year-old male. The area outside You Me Sushi was quickly cordoned off as police launched an investigation.

The victim sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet confirmed the nature of the substance involved, but the act is being treated as serious and deliberate.

A 50-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent. He has been released on bail while enquiries continue.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said officers are actively pursuing “a number of lines of enquiry” and urged the public to come forward with any relevant information. “We are appealing for witnesses or anyone with CCTV or mobile phone footage of the incident to contact us, quoting serial 153 of 28/07,” the statement added.

North Street, a busy commercial road in the city centre, was partially closed while forensic teams examined the scene. The cordon has since been lifted.

Residents and early morning workers expressed concern over the violence taking place in such a public and typically safe area of the city.

The incident has reignited calls for more visible policing during the early hours in central Brighton, particularly as the city heads into a busy summer holiday period. Investigators have not yet established a motive behind the attack.

Police are asking anyone with footage or knowledge of the incident to report it online at sussex.police.uk or call 101.

The investigation remains ongoing.
