A controversial Boxing Day hunt in Lewes is scheduled to go ahead despite continued opposition from animal welfare campaigners.

The annual event which is organised by the Southdown and Eridge with East Sussex & Romney Marsh Hunt, is due to take place on December 26 at 1120am and is expected to attract large crowds, as well as protesters.

The hunt traditionally meets in Lewes town centre before parading through the High Street, drawing supporters who see it as part of a long-standing rural tradition. However, the event has been criticised in recent years by campaigners who oppose hunting and have raised concerns over animal welfare and public safety.

Previous Boxing Day hunts in Lewes have been met with demonstrations, with activists attempting to disrupt proceedings and stage alternative events. There have also been tense scenes in past years, including confrontations between protesters and hunt supporters, leading to police involvement.

Hunt organisers insist their activities are lawful and comply with current legislation, stating they take part in trail hunting, which involves hounds following an artificial scent rather than live animals.
