Sussex Police have issued a Section 35 Dispersal Order covering the county following reports of around 200 vehicles meeting and being driven in a dangerous and anti-social manner on Friday night (9 January).

Police said the vehicles gathered in Southdownview Way, Worthing, at around 9.15pm before moving on to the Old Shoreham Road area of Hove and later travelling towards Peacehaven.

The dispersal order gives officers temporary powers to prevent the vehicles from gathering on any road in Sussex. Those involved are required to leave the area and not return while the order is in force. The order runs from 10.15pm on Friday 9 January until 10.14am on Sunday 11 January. Anyone who breaches the order could be arrested.

Inspector Jim Bowen said: “We have implemented the order to prevent the public from being harassed and distressed and to prevent crime and disorder.

“We take all reports of anti-social behaviour seriously and understand the impact it has on the community. There will be an increased police presence in the area to help keep people safe and respond to concerns raised.”

Residents are encouraged to speak to officers on patrol or report concerns by calling 101. In an emergency, people should call 999.
