Brighton Crown Court has sentenced a 74-year-old man to prison following the sexual abuse of an 11-year-old girl at a family gathering.

The perpetrator, identified as Peter Victor Streeter, of Greenwich Road, Hailsham, appeared before the court on Friday 7 November after admitting three offences committed in September 2022, when the victim was attending a family event in Chichester.

Although he initially pleaded not guilty, Streeter changed his plea to guilty on the first day of his trial, which was set to begin on 8 September.

The judge handed down a custodial sentence of 84 months, later reduced to 75 months due to the early guilty plea. Additionally, Streeter has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and issued with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order lasting 10 years.

Detective Constable Tania Snashall, of the Sussex Police’s Iris Team, praised the bravery of the young victim for speaking out. She noted the long-lasting impact such offending has on young people, emphasising that no sentence can undo what was done, but she hopes the outcome begins the rebuild of the victim’s life and that of her family.
