Four men have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in the violent kidnapping and assault of a 46-year-old man in Brighton in November 2022. The sentencing took place at Hove Crown Court on Friday, 17 October 2025.
The incident began on 5 November 2022, shortly before 4 p.m., when police received reports of a man being forcibly dragged into a car in Chiddingly Close, Whitehawk. The victim was later found in North Drive, with his hands tied behind his back, clothes ripped, chemically discoloured, and the strong smell of bleach on him. He had also been physically assaulted.

Investigations revealed links to two burglaries—one in Sheridan Terrace, Hove, and another in Bedford Square, Brighton. Forensic examinations, CCTV footage, phone data, and witness accounts were pivotal in identifying the suspects.
The four men sentenced are:
Stephen Marsh, 42, of Firle Road, Brighton
William Westein, 29, of Shanklin Road, Brighton
Harry Avis, 27, of Swanborough Drive, Whitehawk
Regan White, 22, of Firle Road, Brighton
An additional man, Frankie Whittington, 25, was charged but later acquitted.
The investigation included DNA testing of items found in a hired van used during the crime, including a balaclava, saws, and knives, which linked almost all the men to the offences. They were charged in July 2024 with burglary, kidnap, false imprisonment, and grievous bodily harm with intent.

Following a three-week trial at Hove Crown Court in January–February 2025, Marsh, Westein, Avis, and White were found guilty of all charges. They were immediately remanded in custody ahead of sentencing.
Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Jones, who led the investigation, commented: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim. The sentences handed down today reflect the severity of these crimes and our commitment to bringing perpetrators of such serious offences to justice.”
Residents are reminded to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to Sussex Police to help maintain public safety.
