Major disruption as person struck by train between Haywards Heath and Three Bridges

BTP

Rail passengers are facing major disruption this afternoon (Tuesday, 29 October) after a person was hit by a train at Balcombe.

The incident has led to the closure of the Brighton Main Line between Haywards Heath and Three Bridges, affecting services operated by Southern and Thameslink.

Emergency services are on the scene, and power to the affected section of the railway has been switched off while they respond.

A spokesperson for Southern Rail said:

“We’re very sorry for the disruption to journeys. Trains are unable to run between Haywards Heath and Three Bridges while the emergency services deal with an incident near the railway. Please check before you travel and allow extra time for your journey.”

Trains are being diverted where possible, and replacement bus services are being arranged.

Passengers are advised to use the National Rail Enquiries website or check updates via @SouthernRailUK and @TLRailUK on X (formerly Twitter) before travelling.

I was travelling to Brighton when this incident happened. I left the train at Three Bridges and tried to continue my journey to Brighton. This was impossible as the train station staff were either incapable or disinterested, luckily my son was eventually able to collect me from the station
I am very sorry that a person has died but not very impressed with the response from Trainline staff.
Sadly I hear this a regular occurrence, I might think of a coach trip next time I visit Brighton.
