Police have launched an urgent appeal to identify two suspects after a suspected arson attack at a mosque in Peacehaven.

Emergency services were called to the Peacehaven Mosque in Phyllis Avenue shortly before 9:50pm on Saturday, October 4, following reports of a fire. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service quickly attended the scene and brought the blaze under control. No one was injured, but the front entrance of the mosque and a nearby vehicle sustained significant damage.

CCTV footage shows two masked individuals approaching the mosque moments before the fire began. The pair, dressed in dark clothing, appear to have poured a flammable liquid around the entrance before setting it alight. One suspect is seen wearing a black jacket with a white “Pre London” logo on the chest, while the other is identifiable by bright red gloves.

Detective Inspector Gavin Patch said the incident is being treated as arson with intent to endanger life. “This was an appalling and reckless act which could have had devastating consequences,” he said. “We are conducting a full investigation and urge anyone who recognises the individuals to come forward immediately.”

Police have released images of the suspects and are appealing for anyone with CCTV, doorbell camera footage, or dashcam recordings from the area between 9:30pm and 10:30pm to come forward. Information can be reported to Sussex Police online or via 101, quoting Operation Spey. In an emergency, call 999.

Superintendent Rachel Swinney said patrols around places of worship have been increased to reassure local communities. “We take all reports of hate-related crime extremely seriously,” she said. “Our officers will continue to engage with community leaders to ensure everyone feels safe and supported.”

The incident has shocked residents of Peacehaven, with many expressing concern and outrage over the deliberate targeting of a place of worship. Local faith groups have condemned the attack and urged unity in response. A spokesperson for the mosque said they were “deeply saddened but grateful no lives were lost,” adding that the community “will not be divided by hate.”
