Serious Bottle Attack on Brighton Seafront: Police Appeal for Witnesses

Police are renewing their call for witnesses after a man was struck on the head with a glass bottle during a confrontation on one of Brighton’s busiest promenade stretches.

The incident occurred just before 3 pm on 5 October on Marine Parade, near the premises of a well-known local gym. According to Sussex Police, the 40-year-old victim was walking along the promenade when a man approached and, during an altercation, delivered a blow to his head with a bottle. The victim sustained a serious head injury and was subsequently taken for treatment.

Later that same day, officers arrested 36-year-old Sulayman Sarr, who currently has no fixed address, in connection with the assault. He was formally charged with grievous bodily harm and wounding with intent.

At his first court appearance on 8 October, Sarr was remanded into custody. His next hearing is scheduled for 11 November.

Sussex Police believe that additional bystanders may have seen or heard events leading up to or following the assault and may hold key information. They are urging anyone who has not yet spoken to officers to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact police via their online portal or by calling 101, quoting reference 734 of 05/10.

This appeal underscores the force’s reliance on community cooperation to uncover vital evidence in street assaults. Despite investigations and the arrest of a suspect, gaps remain in the account of what led to the incident and how it unfolded — making witness testimony potentially pivotal to the case’s progress.
