A 17-year-old boy has been convicted of the manslaughter of a man in Littlehampton following a violent assault earlier this year.

The teenager, from Bognor Regis, pleaded guilty at Portsmouth Crown Court on Monday, 6 October, to causing the death of 51-year-old Paul Lawrence. The tragic incident happened in the early hours of 28 January on Gladonian Road in Littlehampton.

Emergency services were called after reports of an assault, but despite their efforts, Mr Lawrence could not be saved. A post-mortem confirmed he had died as a result of injuries sustained in the attack.

Following a detailed investigation by Sussex Police, the 17-year-old was charged with manslaughter. He has been released on bail and is due to be sentenced on 12 December.

A second 17-year-old, from Littlehampton, was also prosecuted in connection with the same incident. He admitted sending a grossly offensive or menacing message, contrary to Section 127 of the Communications Act 2003, and possessing cannabis. Both teenagers cannot be named for legal reasons because of their age.

Detective Chief Inspector Alex Campbell, who led the investigation, praised the courage of Mr Lawrence’s family throughout the process.

“Paul’s death has had a devastating impact on his loved ones and the community,” he said. “While nothing can undo what happened, I hope this conviction provides some comfort and a sense of closure for his family. I would also like to thank them for their support and dignity during what has been an incredibly difficult time.”

The case has highlighted ongoing concerns about youth violence in Sussex and the need for early intervention to prevent further tragedies. Local police have reiterated their commitment to working with schools, families, and community groups to tackle the issue and provide support to young people at risk of offending.

Sentencing will take place at Portsmouth Crown Court in December.
