A 17-year-old boy from the Crawley area has been sentenced to three years and eight months in prison after pleading guilty to stabbing a fellow teenager in July.

Late in the evening of Thursday 17 July, at around 9:50 pm, emergency services were called to an address on Martyr Avenue in Crawley, following reports that a teenager had been stabbed.

The victim, also a 17-year-old boy, suffered serious injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital. Thankfully he has since made a recovery.

The incident occurred during an altercation between the victim and two boys he did not know. After an argument, the victim was stabbed. The perpetrator then fled the scene and entered a nearby property, but was arrested the following day.

He was charged with:

  • wounding with intent
  • possession of a bladed article
  • threatening a person with a bladed article

At a court sitting in Brighton, the defendant pleaded guilty to all charges and was remanded into secure accommodation prior to sentencing.

In sentencing, the court recognised both the seriousness of the offence and the potential for much worse outcomes had the victim’s injuries been more severe.

As Sussex Police’s Detective Chief Inspector Pauline Lane remarked: “This incident is another unwelcome reminder of the dangers of knife crime, which could have ended in tragic circumstances.” She added the force remains focused on reducing knife crime—through early intervention with young people, enforcement, and working with partners.
