The council said the area had become a regular location for people sleeping rough, partly due to the shelter it provided. Concerns were raised about public safety, hygiene and the impact on the busy station area.

A multi-agency operation was carried out to clear the site, followed by a deep clean. The council confirmed that daily checks will now take place to prevent the area being used again for rough sleeping.

Umder the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP), those affected were offered accommodation and support. However, the council said the individuals involved had so far refused offers of help and housing.

Council officers and partner organisations said outreach work will continue, with specialist teams aiming to encourage rough sleepers to engage with support services and move away from sleeping on the streets.
