Work has begun on removing the Aquarium Roundabout on Brighton seafront as part of the final phase of the Valley Gardens regeneration project.

The first stage of the work involves overnight road closures, taking place during one of the quietest periods of the year to reduce disruption. These night-time closures are expected to last for around two weeks, with diversion routes in place.

During the works, buses are being diverted via West Street and along the seafront, while eastbound A259 traffic is being rerouted through Edward Street.

Once removed, the roundabout will be replaced with a new traffic light-controlled junction. Brighton & Hove City Council says the new layout will be safer and easier to use, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists, and will improve connections between the seafront, Palace Pier and the city centre.

The scheme forms part of Phase 3 of the wider Valley Gardens project, which has already seen major changes between St Peter’s Church and Victoria Gardens. The final phase also includes plans for new public spaces and improved walking and cycling routes linking the city centre with the seafront.

Council officers will be available to answer questions about the works and the wider scheme at drop-in sessions being held at Jubilee Library later this month.

The council expects the final phase of the Valley Gardens project, including the new Aquarium junction, to be completed by summer 2026.
