Traffic on the A259 near Roedean has been brought to a standstill following a police pursuit involving a Royal Mail van.

The busy coastal road has been closed in both directions between Roedean Road and the Ovingdean roundabout while officers carry out investigations and vehicle recovery work.

Sussex Police confirmed they were called to reports of a stolen vehicle in Brighton earlier in the day.

A spokesperson for the force said:

“Police received a report of a stolen vehicle in Hamsey Road, Brighton, on 8 January.

“The vehicle was later seen by officers, and crashed on the A259 at Ovingdean.

“A man has been arrested, and a temporary road closure is in place while we investigate this incident.”

Travel disruption is severe across the area, with long delays on surrounding routes. Sussex Travel Watch said the incident involved a multi-vehicle road traffic collision and warned motorists to avoid the area if possible.

In an update, Sussex Travel Watch said:

“A259 at Roedean multi-vehicle RTC ongoing. Road remains closed both ways between Roedean Road and the Ovingdean roundabout.

“All surrounding roads including Wilson Avenue, Warren Road eastbound, Elm Grove and Bear Road have long delays. Avoid if possible.”

Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes while emergency services continue to deal with the incident. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
