St Nicholas Church in Worth, a Grade I listed site of significant historical importance, has been targeted by repeated thefts from its churchyard, causing distress to the local community and church officials.
The offences involve historic personal graves and monuments, some of which are more than 200 years old. Police say the thefts are particularly upsetting due to the age and cultural value of the memorials that have been damaged or stolen.
Local Neighbourhood Policing Teams are now carrying out extra patrols in the area and are working closely with church staff as part of the ongoing response. Visitors to the church grounds are being urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour.
Police believe the person or people responsible may be wearing high-visibility clothing and are asking the public to take note of any descriptions of individuals or vehicles seen in the area.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency.
