A man from Lancing has been jailed for 18 years after subjecting two victims to a campaign of sexual abuse, stalking, and harassment.

James Green, 37, of Brighton Road, Lancing, was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court to 12 years in custody and a further six years on extended licence after being found guilty of a series of serious offences including rape, stalking, harassment, theft, criminal damage, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and perverting the course of justice.

The court heard that Green harassed a woman in her 30s over a prolonged period, destroying her property, stealing jewellery, and posting abusive material on her fence. He even moved into a nearby property to continue his campaign of intimidation.

At the same time, he groomed and manipulated a teenage relative of the woman. In August 2023, Green raped the teenager at his home. Despite being released on bail with strict conditions not to contact her, he went on to bombard the victim with more than 1,600 calls and messages over four months, sending explicit videos and threatening her to withdraw her statement.

Green’s actions caused immense distress to both victims. Following his conviction, the judge imposed a lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Order and restraining orders to protect them.

Detective Inspector Harry Doyle, from Sussex Police, described Green as “a dangerous man who inflicted severe emotional and psychological harm.” He praised the victims for their courage in coming forward and supporting the investigation.

“This case shows the strength and bravery of those who speak out,” he said. “Their evidence ensured Green was brought to justice, and he will no longer be able to harm anyone else.”

Sussex Police urged anyone experiencing stalking, harassment or sexual abuse to seek help immediately, assuring victims that their reports will be taken seriously and handled sensitively.

James Green will serve his sentence in custody before being monitored under licence for six further years to protect the public.
